સુન્દરકાંડ.
અથ એકચત્વારિંશસ્સર્ગઃ

સ ચ વાગ્ભિઃ પ્રશસ્તાભિઃ ગમિષ્યન્ પૂજિતસ્તયા|
તસ્માદ્દેશાદપક્રમ્ય ચિંતયામાસ વાનરઃ||1||

સ|| સઃ વાનરઃ પ્રશસ્થાભિઃ વાગ્ભિઃ પૂજિતઃ તસ્માત્ દેશાત્ અપક્રમ્યગમિષ્યન્ ચિંતયામાસ||

That Vanara having been honored with choicest words, started thinking about going from that place.

અલ્પશેષમિદં કાર્યં દૃષ્ટેયમસિતેક્ષણા|
ત્રીન્ ઉપાયાનતિક્રમ્ય ચતુર્થ ઇહ વિદ્યતે||2||
ન સામ રક્ષસ્સુ ગુણાય કલ્પતે ન દાનમર્થોપચિતેષુ યુજ્યતે|
નભેદસાધ્યા બલદર્પિતા જનાઃ પરાક્રમસ્ત્વેવ મમેહ રોચતે||3||
ન ચાસ્ય કાર્યસ્ય પરાક્રમા દૃતે વિનિશ્ચયઃ કશ્ચિદિહોપપદ્યતે|
હતપ્રવીરાહિ રણેહિ રાક્ષસાઃ કથંચિદીયુર્યદિહાદ્ય માર્દવમ્||4||

સ|| ઇદં કાર્યં અલ્પશેષં (અસ્તિ)| અયં અસિતેક્ષણા દૃષ્ટા| ત્રીન્ ઉપાયાન્ અતિક્રમ્ય ઇહ ચતુર્થ વિદ્યતે|| રક્ષસ્સુ સામ ગુણાય ન કલ્પતે| અર્થોપચિતેષુ દાનં ન યુજ્યતે| બલદર્પિતાઃ જનાઃ ભેદ સાધ્યાઃ ન | ઇહ મમ પરાક્રમસ્ત્વેવ રોચતે||ઇહ અસ્ય કાર્યસ્ય પરાક્રમાત્ ઋતે વિનિશ્ચયઃ કશ્ચિત્ ન ઉપપદ્યતે| યત્ રણે હતપ્રવીરાઃ રાક્ષસાઃ અદ્ય ઇહ કથંચિત્ માર્દવં ઈયુઃ||

' This black eyed lady has been seen. Very little work is remaining. Beyond the three strategies here there is a fourth strategy. With Rakshasas negotiation is of no use. Being wealthy gifts also will not work. For people proud of their strength dissension will not work. Here only my valor will work. Here for this task other than valor nothing else will hold. If I kill a few strong ones they may soften and yield.

કાર્યે કર્મણિ નિર્દિષ્ટે યો બહૂન્યપિ સાધયેત્|
પૂર્વકાર્યાવિરોધેન સ કાર્યં કર્તુ મર્હતિ||5||
ન હ્યેક સાધકો હેતુઃ સ્વલ્પસ્યાપીહ કર્મણઃ|
યોહ્યર્થં બહુધા વેદ સ સમર્થોsર્થ સાધને||6||

સ|| કાર્યે કર્મણિ નિર્દિષ્ટે યઃ પૂર્વકાર્યા વિરોધેન બહૂણ્યપિ સાધયેત્ સઃ કાર્યં કર્તું અર્હતિ|| ઇહ સ્વલ્પસ્ય અપિ કર્મણઃ સાર્ધકઃ હેતુઃ એકઃ ન હિ | યઃ અર્થં બહુધા વેદ સઃ અર્થસાધને સમર્થઃ ||

When a work is entrusted one who achieves many without affecting the earlier work is the one who is fit to do the work. Here for achieving a small task effectively there is no one way. One who knows many ways is capable.

ઇહૈવ તાવત્કૃતનિશ્ચયો હ્યહં
યદિ વ્રજેયં પ્લવગેશ્વરાલયમ્|
પરાત્મ સમ્મર્થવિશેષતત્ત્વવિત્
તતઃ કૃતં સ્યાન્ મમભર્તૃશાસનમ્||7||

સ|| અહં ઇહૈવ તાવત્ પરાત્મસમ્મર્દવિશેષતત્ત્વવિત્ પ્લવગેશ્વરાલયંવ્રજેયં યદિ તતઃ મમ ભર્તૃ શાસનં કૃતં સ્યાત્ ||

Here itself if I go to the abode of Vanaras after understanding the difference between the strength of the enemy forces and our strength in war, then the orders of my lord are well executed.

કથં નુ ખલ્વદ્ય ભવેત્સુખાગતં પ્રસહ્ય યુદ્ધં મમરાક્ષસૈઃ સહ|
તથૈવ ખલ્વાત્મબલં ચ સારવત્ સમ્માનયેન્માં ચ રણે દશાનનઃ||8||
તતઃ સમાસાદ્ય રણે દશાનનં સમંત્રિવર્ગં સબલપ્રયાયિનમ્|
હૃદિ સ્થિતં તસ્ય મતં બલં ચ વૈ સુખેન મત્વાહ મિતઃ પુનર્વ્રજે||9||

સ|| અદ્ય મમ રાક્ષસૈઃ સહ પ્રસહ્ય યુદ્ધં કથં નુ સુખાગતં ભવેત્ તથૈવ આત્મબલં ચ સારવત્ સઃ દશાનનઃ ચ મામ્ રણે માનયેત્||તતઃ સમંત્રિવર્ગં સબલપ્રયાયિનં દશાનનં રણે સમાસાદ્ય તસ્ય હૃદિ સ્થિતં મતં બલં ચૈવ મત્ત્વા અહમ્ ઇતઃ સુખેન પુનઃ વ્રજે||

How to engage in a war with Rakshasas today ? How to have a happy ending ? That ten ten-headed will gauge his strength and ours in that way only. Then after finding out the strength of the ten-headed with his army chiefs marching forward and his mind along with his ministers, I can happily go from here.

ઇદમસ્ય નૃશંસસ્ય નંદનોપમમુત્તમં|
વનં નેત્રમનઃ કાંતં નાનાદ્રુમલતાયુતમ્||10||
ઇદં વિધ્વંસયિષ્યામિ શુષ્કં વનમિવાનલઃ|
અસ્મિન્ ભગ્ને તતઃ કોપં કરિષ્યતિ દશાનનઃ||11||

સ|| નૃશંસસ્ય અસ્ય ઇદં નેત્રમનઃ ક્રાંતં નાનાદ્રુમલાયુતં ઉત્તમં વનં નંદનોપમં ||શુષ્કં વનં અનલઃ ઇવ ઇદં વિધ્વંસયિષ્યામિ| અસ્મિન્ ભગ્ને તતઃ દશાનનઃ કોપં કરિષ્યતિ||

This wicked one's Ashoka grove is a feast to the eyes and mind with different kinds of trees creepers and is like the Nandana grove. Like a dried forest is destroyed by the fire, I will destroy this garden. When this is devastated the ten-headed will be angry.

તતોમહત્ સાશ્વમહારથદ્વિપં બલં સમાદેક્ષ્યતિ રાક્ષસાધિપઃ|
ત્રિશૂલકાલાયસપટ્ટિ સાયુધમ્ તતોમહત્ યુદ્ધમિદં ભવિષ્યતિ||12||
અહં તુ તૈઃ સંયતિ ચંડવિક્રમૈઃ સમેત્ય રક્ષોભિરસહ્યવિક્રમઃ|
નિહત્ય તદ્રાવણચોદિતં બલં સુખં ગમિષ્યામિ કપીશ્વરાલયમ્||13||

સ|| તતઃ રાક્ષસાધિપઃ સાશ્વમહારથદ્વિપં મહત્ ત્રિશૂલકાલાયસપટ્ટિ સાયુધં બલં સમાદેક્ષ્યતિ | તતઃ ઇદં મહત્ યુદ્ધં ભવિષ્યતિ|| અહં તુ ચણ્ડવિક્રમૈઃ તૈઃ રક્ષોભિઃ સંયતિ સમેત્ય અસહ્યવિક્રમઃ રાવણચોદિતં તત્ બલં નિહત્ય સુખમ્ કપીશ્વરાલયં ગમિષ્યામિ||

Then the king of Rakshasas will send a great force with horses chariots and elephants armed with tridents and spears. Then a great war will ensue. Then colliding with Rakshasas of irresistible valor endowed with fierce strength sent by Ravana, and destroying them, I can go happily to the abode of Vanaras.

તતો મારુતવત્ ક્રુદ્ધો મારુતિર્ભીમવિક્રમઃ|
ઊરુવેગેન મહતા દ્રુમાન્ ક્ષેપ્તુ મથારભત્||14||
તતસ્તુ હનુમાન્ વીરો બભંજ પ્રમદાવનં|
મત્તદ્વિજસમાઘુષ્ટં નાનાદ્રુમલતાયુતમ્||15||

સ|| તતઃ ભીમવિક્રમઃ મારુતિઃ કૃદ્ધઃ અથ મહતા ઊરુવેગેન મારુતવત્ દ્રુમાન્ ક્ષેપ્તું આરભત્ ||તતઃ વીરઃ હનુમાન્ મત્તદ્વિજસમાઘુષ્ટં નાદ્રુમલાયુતં પ્રમદાવનં બભંજ||

Then the fierce warrior Maruti being furious started uprooting the trees with speed sprung from his thighs. Then Hanuman felled a variety of trees and creepers inhabited by intoxicated birds in the beautiful garden meant for women folk.

તદ્વનં મથિતૈર્વૃક્ષૈઃ ભિનૈશ્ચ સલિલાશયૈઃ|
ચૂર્ણિતૈઃ પર્વતાગ્રૈશ્ચ બભૂવા પ્રિયદર્શનમ્||16||
નાના શકુંતવિરુતૈઃ પ્રભિન્નૈઃ સલિલાશયૈઃ|
તામ્રૈઃ કિસલયૈઃ ક્લાંતૈઃ ક્લાંતદ્રુમલતાયુતમ્||17||
ન બભૌ તદ્વનં તત્ર દાવાનલહતં યદા|
વ્યાકુલાવરણા રેજુઃ વિહ્વલા ઇવ તા લતાઃ||18||
લતાગૃહૈઃ ચિત્રગૃહૈશ્ચ નાશિતૈઃ મહોરગૈર્વ્યાળ મૃગૈશ્ચ નિર્દુતૈઃ|
શિલાગૃહૈરુન્મધિતૈઃ તથા ગૃહૈઃ પ્રણષ્ટરૂપં તદભૂન્મહત્ વનમ્||19||

સ|| તત્ વનં મથિતૈઃ વૃક્ષૈઃ ભિન્નૈઃ સલિલાશયૈઃ ચૂર્ણિતૈઃ પર્વતાગ્રૈશ્ચ અપ્રિયદર્શનં બભૂવ||ક્લાંતદ્રુમલતાયુતં તત્ વનં નનાશકુંતવિરુતૈઃ પ્રભિન્નૈઃ સલિલાસયૈઃ ક્લાંતૈઃ તામ્રૈઃ કિસલયૈઃ દાવાનલહતંરણાઃ તાઃ લતાઃ વિહ્વલાઃ ઇવ રેજુઃ||મહત્ તત્ વનં નાશિતૈઃ લતાગૃહૈઃ ચિત્રગૃહૈઃ નિર્ધુતૈઃ મહોરગૈઃ વ્યાલમૃગૈશ્ચતથા ઉન્મથિતૈઃ શિલાગૃહૈઃ ગૃહૈઃ પ્રણષ્ટ રૂપં અભૂત્ ||

That grove with destroyed trees, breached ponds, and powdered mountain peaks became ugly looking. With wilted trees and creepers, with birds shrieking with different kinds of sounds with ponds of water breached , and with tender coppery shoots withered, the garden looked as though burnt by forest fire and climbers looked like women shivering in fear with their robes disarrayed. The great garden lay destroyed with arbors and picture galleries ruined huge serpents and animals scattered , stone houses and sheds destroyed.

સા વિહ્વલા શોકલતાપ્રતાના વનસ્થલીશોકલતાપ્રતાના|
જાતા દશાસ્યપ્રમદાવનસ્ય કપેર્બલાદ્દિ પ્રમદાવનસ્ય||20||

સ||દશાસ્ય પ્રમદાવનસ્ય પરમદાવનસ્ય કપેઃ સા વનસ્થલી બલાત્ વિહ્વલા શોકલતાપ્રતાના જાતા||

The pleasure garden of Ravana totally destroyed appeared as though it was spreading the creepers of sorrow by the Vanara who set out to protect the lady.

સ તસ્ય કૃતાર્થપતેર્મહાકપિઃ મહદ્વ્યળીકં મનસો મહાત્મનઃ|
યુયુત્સુરેકો બહુભિઃ મહાબલૈઃ શ્રિયા જ્વલન્ તોરણમાસ્થિતઃ કપિઃ||21||

સ|| સઃ મહાકપિઃ મહાત્મનઃ તસ્ય અર્થપતેઃ મનસઃ મહત્ વ્યલીકં કૃત્વા મહાબલૈઃ બહુભિઃ એકઃ યુયુત્સુઃ શ્રિયાજ્વલન્ તોરણમ્ આસ્થિતાઃ||

The great Vanara glowing having created unpleasantness for the ruler of wealth . stood at the archway ready to fight single handedly many warriors.

ઇત્યાર્ષે શ્રીમદ્રામાયણે આદિકાવ્યે વાલ્મીકીયે
ચતુર્વિંશત્ સહસ્રિકાયાં સંહિતાયામ્
શ્રીમત્સુન્દરકાંડે એકચત્વારિંશસ્સર્ગઃ ||

Thus ends Sarga forty one of Sundarakanda of Ramayana the first ever poem composed in Sanskrit , by the first poet sage Valmiki
